Halloweekend 2022 in NYC: Halloween Costumes and Fun Music Fridays

halloween costumes, halloween nyc, halloweekend 2022, halloween

Happy Halloween

My friends and I celebrated Halloween Friday night in the city.

I decided it would be fitting to be Elle Woods, as it is my last year of law school, and I like wearing wigs (from my days in the theater department, except I never got to be a blonde!) Also, on the topic of my time in the theater department, I was in two productions of Legally Blonde. Once, an all-girls production when I was in the 4th grade, when I was cast as Warner, and had to propose to a girl who was a bully, and then again in 10th grade, where I got to be a Delta Nu, Elle’s sorority sisters/Greek Chorus.

How do I look as a blonde? A lot of people thought I was Barbie, which I can see, but most friends guessed Elle Woods.

Friday night we went to Treadwell Park Downtown to celebrate our twin friend’s Kendall and Kaitlin’s 25th birthdays. The food was really good. We split the giant pretzel and sweet potato fries. It was so good to see so many friends from Wake.

And then we headed back to Le Poisson Rouge for Fun Music Fridays. THE BEST LIVE MUSIC AND DANCING IN NYC! $12 tickets! What could be better?

The music was great, as usual (our second time here two weeks in a row) and it was packed! So many people decked out in costumes! My favorite ones that I saw were Mia Thermapolis from Princess Diaries (I’m going to be her next year) and Coach Taylor from Friday Night Lights.

After dancing until 2am, Alex and I walked back to the East Village and grabbed some late-night sausage and pepperoni pizza. And if that wasn’t enough, we went to Brooklyn Dumpling Shop (open 24hrs on Friday and Saturday) in the East Village. It is an automated dumpling shop, where you order the dumplings on a tablet and when the dumplings are done, they get placed into a lockbox where the only way to unlock them is with your receipt. It’s a really cool concept and the dumplings were delicious!

Five Friday Favorites | 23 | Live Music in NYC, Duo Lingo, IOS 16, Running, Peloton App and More

central park, nyc, nyc central park, new york travel guide, new york city

1.          Duo Lingo- I majored in French in college and studied abroad in France and sad to say, my French is not as good as it once was. So, I have been trying to practice every day, even for 5 minutes on Duo Lingo! I really like their podcasts on the app! It’s great practice and fun to listen to while you are getting ready or in the car.

2.          Brass Monkey- A 3 story bar + rooftop in Meatpacking! My friends and I rarely venture out of the East Village to party, because anything outside of the East Village is too fancy and/or expensive. But we decided to venture outside of our comfort zones and meet some friends at this bar. It’s huge and really nice. Unfortunately, there is a $10 cover fee at the door if you show up after 10:30pm, and the bouncers are kind of jerks, but other than that, there was good music, and good vibes.

3.          IOS 16- I updated my iPhone the other day and am loving the new customization feature for the Lock Screen. I love that we can finally change the color and font of the time and date.

4.          Peloton App- I have started running to train for my upcoming 5 mile Turkey trot and I’m really enjoying using the outdoor runs and the treadmill runs (especially with Jon!). As always, I love all the cycling classes (my preference for cardio) but the barre classes with Hannah are also great!

5.          Fun Music Fridays at Le Poisson Rouge NYC- I found out about this event via Instagram and I was skeptical, but it was SO much fun! Live music and dancing for $12! The music was AMAZING! All the best covers from the 90s and 2000s. I have never had so much fun dancing in NYC. I cannot stop raving about this event. This Friday (while you are reading this) is the LAST night for live music and dancing for $12 so I would highly recommend, and who knows, I may be there again! The venue was also a good size and there weren’t too many people.

I’m published!
If you are reading this, you may be confused. You may be thinking: “Duh, Elizabeth, you have a blog, you publish blog posts several times a week…”

Well yes, that is true, but I am now published in an ACADEMIC JOURNAL!
I was offered a position on Family Court Review after my 1L year and gratefully accepted the position. During my first year on the journal, I was required to write a Student Note. I spent all year writing it. I had to write 25 pages about an issue in family law and come up with a novel solution.

I decided to write about education inequality in New York State between public and private schools. After lots of research, drafting and revisions, the managing board of my journal selected my article to be published!

Five Friday Favorites | 22 | Puppies in NYC, Sarah Flint Discount Code, Mexican Food, TikTok and more

city pups, puppies in nyc, nyc puppies, dogs, fun things to do in new york

1.          Citipups NYC- If you need a daily pick me up or a stress reliever, head over to Chelsea for Citipups where you can see adorable baby puppies AND play with them. I am obsessed with golden doodles and Alex loves long-haired Weiner dogs. Both of which Citipups has. P.S. These puppies are not from puppy mills, they are from reputable breeders.

2.          Pink for fall- I know when we think of pink we think of spring and summer, but pink is HOT right now for fall. Check out this adorable cropped blazer. I kind of love it!

3.          Sarah Flint Rosie Loafers- Loafers are also very hot right this fall, despite that they are classic and never go out of style. I am loving my Rosie loafers in cheetah from Sarah Flint. They are perfect for fall. You can use my promo code for $50 off: SARAHFLINT-BAELIZABETHG

4.          Mexicue- Mexican food with a barbecue spin in Manhattan. Get the NACHOS! The tacos are delicious too, but the nachos are my favorite. Last time we went, Alex got the burnt ends bowl, and he said it was fantastic.

5.          TikTok- Come follow me on TikTok. I am having so much fun making fall content over there. I love using trending sounds and relate them to my brand.

Five Friday Favorites | 21 | Chi Chi London Review, Nicola Bathie Collection at Dillards, New York Wine Fest, Chelsea Piers and Kiss Press-On Nails

dress review, press on nails, nail review, dillards, party dress, formal dress, nyc date night, nyc date, golf in nyc, driving range, wine tasting, Chi Chi London Review, Nicola Bathie Collection at Dillards, New York Wine Fest, Chelsea Piers and Kiss Press-On Nails

1.          Chi Chi London- My new favorite party dress brand. I wish I had somewhere fabulous to wear my new Chi Chi dress (gifted), besides just to my backyard (as seen above and on Instagram). The quality is really nice and so are the prices. I also love the styles Chi Chi has on their website!

2.          Nicola Bathie x Antonio Mellani drop at Dillards- I love Nicola Bathie’s style and she is one of my favorite gals to follow on Instagram. She just launched her newest (I think second) collection with Dillards, and everything is absolutely beautiful. I am trying to save my paychecks right now, so I did not make any purchases, but I am eyeing this coat and these pearl heels. My favorite black mules (with pom poms) from last year are from Nicola’s 2021 holiday collection with Dillards and they are back this year in an updated style!

3.          New York Wine Fest- Lauren and I went to New York Wine Fest on Saturday to taste different wines and liquors from around New York and from around the country and world. Lauren found the tickets on Groupon. It was cool, we got a little wine glass and we got to sample as many wines as we wanted. There were lots of vendors. My favorite brands that I tried were Long Drink and Smooth Sail.

4.          Chelsea Piers- Grab your clubs and your friends and go hit some golf balls at Chelsea Piers. Alex and I met our friend Kaitlin for some shots off the pier (which faces New Jersey and it looks like you’re hitting balls into the Hudson River). They serve drinks and food. It’s a really fun thing to do with friends on a sunny day.

5.          Kiss Impress Press-On Manicure- Kiss kindly sent me a PR package with lashes and press on nails. I’ve never worn press on nails before, but I’m really impressed with these! I like the color combo. They are super adhesive and sticky. I think they look really good and natural! These are great when you want your nails done for an event and you don’t have time or just for everyday wear! I had one nail fall off about 12 hours after I put it on and another one after 3 days, but the others are still stuck on tight! I’m a big fan.

How to be an Attorney: Step 2: How to Decide When to go to Law School, When to Apply and How to Pick a Law School

how to be an attorney, law school, law school advice, picking a law school, how to decide when to go to law school

Welcome to part 2 of my How to be an Attorney series. Click HERE to read Step 1: What to do in College. Today I am discussing how to decide when to go to law school and how to pick where you want to go.

law school, how to be an attorney, law school advice, fall outfit, fall fashion
How to decide when to go to law school:

I talked to my closest attorney relative about law school, my sister-in-law, when I was going into my junior year of college. She went straight from undergrad into law school. She said that it worked for her because she didn’t think she would’ve wanted to go back to school after years off from it.

I followed her lead and went straight into law school after undergrad.

When I got to law school, I had lots of classmates that were fresh out of college like me, but others who had children, previous careers or took a couple of years off after undergrad. Some always knew they wanted to go to law school like me, others only figured it out after working for several years.

There are many reasons people don’t go straight from undergrad into law school (for example: they don’t know that they want to go to law school, they have other careers, they have families, they want to save up money, they want work experience, they want a break from homework, etc.). And there are many reasons people go from one school to the next (for example: you want to get it over with as soon as possible, you think it’s easier being in the school mindset, etc.).

Only you will know when the timing is good for you.

When to apply to law school:

The law school application process is similar to applying to undergrad.

You have to take a standardized exam, the LSAT, you have to write a personal statement and fill out applications. I will dive more into the physical application process and all of these things in my next post in this series, but it is important to think about when you want to go to law school which will determine when you have to take the LSAT and apply.

Law school applications run on a similar time frame to undergraduate applications. You can apply the year of to get into school.

I applied the spring of my senior year of college, got accepted and started school in the summer of the same year.

I had other friends that applied in the fall of our senior year and then went to law school in the summer.

You can also apply, and then defer your acceptance for a year (at most law schools).

How to pick a law school:

Picking a law school is like picking an undergrad school. There are pros and cons to each, and there is a school for everyone. You can decide where you want to go based on location, based on how much money in scholarships you can get, based on what the schools are known for, based on their acceptance rates, based on where you want to practice, etc. You decide what the criteria is.

I had four years of undergrad in North Carolina, and I loved it. But I missed my family in New York. I knew I wanted to practice in New York one day. I also knew I would be paying for law school on my own. Ultimately, I decided to only apply to law schools in New York.

Going to school close to home was a good choice for me. I didn’t really care where I went to law school, I just wanted to get in and become an attorney. It turns out my school is pretty well recognized in New York State anyway, so it worked out.

Going to law school on Long Island means I am able to live at home for free, have the support of my family and friends and have home cooked meals every night. Law school is expensive and emotionally and mentally taxing and I’m really glad I was able to be at home for these three years of torture. These are things to consider when choosing where you want to apply to school.

It also didn’t hurt to go to law school in New York when applying for internships and jobs. This is another thing to keep in mind. Networking in the legal field is huge.

Another thing to consider is that most states (around 30) test via the Universal Bar Exam or (UBE) so you could go to school in one state and take the bar exam and practice in another state.

So, in one sense, it doesn’t really matter where you go, because if your school teaches for the UBE and you want to take the test in another state, you should be fine. However, there are state specific laws, like property and wills/trusts/estates, and law schools do teach the law of the state that the students are in, so just keep that in mind.

At the end of the day, I truly believe you have to work hard in law school, graduate, pass the bar and you will be an attorney, one way or another.

Five Friday Favorites | 21 | NYC Tapas Restaurant, Madewell Jeans, Barrington Gifts Tote, My Favorite Tweed Blazer and More

NYC Tapas Restaurant, Birdies Mules, birdies shoes, Madewell Jeans, Barrington Gifts Tote, My Favorite Tweed Blazer, favorites, weekly favorites, fall favorites, nyc restaurant

1.          Lamano- My new favorite tapas restaurant. Such a great date night spot. Alex and I had a candle lit dinner with the best tapas in NYC. It tasted like we were back in Spain. We got the croquettes, hummus, calamari, potatoes, artichokes, and Macadam almonds.

2.          Birdies Songbird mules- Looking for a comfortable statement shoe? Every single time I wear these shoes I get at least one compliment on them. These shoes are so fun and make me happy!

3.          Madewell jeans- The best jeans on the market. I love that Madewell jeans come in both tall and taller! I wear the taller length because I like my jeans to hit right above my ankle. Madewell makes high quality, highly structured, yet stretchy jeans. They are super high waisted and suck you in in all the right place.

4.          Barrington Gifts tote- The best tote bag for work or school. I love that you can customize it with a ton of different patterns and put your monogram or initials on it.

5.          Tweed blazer- This is the most perfect fall tweed blazer. The colors in the fabric match with all things in your fall wardrobe. I love to wear it with camel-colored sweaters, burgundy, green, denim, white and gray. Such a classic and beautiful piece. I wear mine every week in the autumn (and if I could, every day).
