Grandmillenial and Coastal Grandmother Explained

preppy, bridgerton, costal grandma, grandmillenial, grandmilenial, jane austen, long dresses, puff sleeves, stripes, beach outfit, nautical

What’s grandmillenial?

Grandmillenial is both a fashion genre as well as a lifestyle. For fashion: think traditional, like Bridgeton, long dresses, puff sleeves, pleats, empire waists, ruffles, pastels, blue and white floral prints and super girly outfits. This fashion genre became popular in 2020 and has continued today. It is also a lifestyle of wine tastings, fancy dinners, needlepoint, decorating your house in blue and white ceramics, high tea and romance.

What is costal grandmother you may ask?

It’s like grandmillenial but with more preppy and coastal vibes. This is the newest lifestyle and fashion aesthetic plaguing the internet. Think my outfit, a button down, or a caftan. The lifestyle of coastal grandma is taking long walks on the beach, reading a good novel, candle lit dinner parties, fresh flowers and more blue and white with a nautical trend.

Consider this your lifestyle trend report for the week. Grandmillenial and coastal grandmother are both fashion genres but also lifestyle genres. Everyone interprets them differently so I would love to hear your thoughts in a comment below!

I am no professional in social trends and usually have no idea what the social trends are, but these I know pretty well and love them both.

Last spring and summer, grandmillenial was in and it is again this season as Bridgerton season two is out as is Sanditon season two (which if you haven’t seen either of them yet, you HAVE to watch, consider this your homework assignment).

I love the grandmillenial style because I have always dressed more conservatively because 1) I don’t like to show off my body and 2) my mother always taught me to keep it classy and covered up.

I am all for the midi dresses because they are pretty, and they remind me of playing dress up and I feel like I am in Bridgerton. I also love long midi or maxi Bridgerton inspired dresses because I’m tall and I walk around NYC and NYC is windy and I don’t like to flash people.

So, this season, I will be continuing to rock my midi and long dresses in all their puff sleeve glory, but also, I will be mixing in costal grandma (as you can see by my sweater and bag).

Catch me sipping tea at The Plaza one weekend, giving you grandmillenial vibes, and then the next weekend chilling on the beach in my straw hat and stripes.

What I Learned from my Legal Externship on the Trademark Team at an Intellectual Property Firm

legal internship, intern, law school, white jeans, gingham, spring outfit, tips and tricks

I just finished working 168 hours at an intellectual property law firm in Manhattan.

What is an extern or externship?

It’s an intern that gets compensated for working in academic credit. I worked 168 hours and received four credits towards graduation.

What is intellectual property?

There is real property which is tangible possessions like a house or jewelry. Intellectual property is possession and ownership over nontangible things. Intellectual property is most commonly known for trademarks, patents and copyrights. Those are the big three intellectual property umbrellas.

What did I learn? (A lot of things they don’t teach you in law school)

How to prepare for trademark litigation and how to analyze and organize discovery

How to assist in filing USPTO ethics violations

How to write an opposition letter and cease and desist letters

            How to conduct anti-counterfeit searches

I learned how to conduct more efficient research on a wide variety of IP topics

-      I learned how to present my research to the partner

Tips for others?

-       Always carry a note pad or notebook and pen with you when you are going to meet with a partner or associate

-       Have a positive attitude

-       Ask a ton of questions but only after you try to figure it out yourself first because you don’t want to be too annoying

-       Practice researching and writing memos whenever you can

-       Collaborate with coworkers not on your direct team

-       Always say yes with a big smile on your face (this is my big tip from last year’s post)

-       Go to social work events when you are invited (I was lucky enough to be invited to a black-tie gala and some great happy hours) and mingle with other coworkers

-       I don’t like to use the word “network” because it sounds fake. So instead of “networking,” try to make genuine friendships and connections with people you work with.

Being Alone

casual spring outfit, trench coat, silk scarf, straw bag, stripes, denim skirt, spring clothes, preppy spring outfit
I have always thought of myself as pretty independent. I’ve always liked to march to the beat of my own drum. But I have recently realized I’m not as independent as I used to be or I would like to be.

In college, my freshman year, being independent also meant being alone. I no longer had my parents and twin brother around all the time. I was trying to make friends and adjust to college. I didn’t like being alone. Or being alone in public. So, I spent a ton of time in my dorm room doing homework. My poor roommate! Sorry B, if you are reading this.

But eventually I got over my fear of being alone in public and started eating lunch and breakfast alone if I didn’t have a friend to meet up with. And it didn’t feel weird to be alone.

I quickly felt more and more independent.

My junior year, I started dating my current boyfriend. This is no knock to him or our relationship, but I rely a lot on him (as I’m sure a lot of couples do). He’s always there to answer my texts when I’m doing something alone or if I see something funny, I’ll shoot him a text, so I never feel truly alone. Or even in college he was always someone to eat with.

So honestly, I really forgot how to be alone. And don’t get me wrong not being alone is great but I forgot the importance of doing things alone.

Recently, I realized I was nervous to do things alone, like how I was nervous when I was a freshman in college. I also noticed that I was always so impressed with my friends when they would tell me about the cool bars they went to ALONE! Single girls out in the wild of NYC alone!!! I was so impressed, and I remember telling them how brave I thought they were. They never felt that they were being brave for doing things by themselves, they just wanted to do certain things and didn’t have anyone to go with but themselves, so they took themselves out on dates.

On a whim, while I was in desperate need for a new podcast to listen to, I started listening to Fun on Weekdays. The host reminded me of the power of being alone and how important it is to do fun things by yourself. Whether that be take a walk (which I do regularly), take yourself out for lunch, go get a coffee (which I don’t drink) or go shopping by yourself.

Don’t get me wrong, all those things are fun to do with friends, but there is also nothing wrong with doing them by yourself.

denim skirt, casual spring outfit, trench coat, silk scarf, stripes, preppy outfit, straw bag

So, I’ve been slowly trying to do more things alone and be more comfortable doing things with me, myself and I.

And I mean like really alone like no music or podcasts or phone calls to your friends or mom.

I started going to Pilates classes by myself every week.

I was even invited last minute to a black-tie gala for work. Alex didn’t have time to get a tux, I only had 4 hours to get home to Long Island, change and get back to the city. So I went by myself and I felt okay. I was nervous to be by myself but once my coworkers got there, it wasn’t so bad, even if I showed up by myself.

Maybe this post is silly, but I’ve realized how important it is to spend time with yourself.

Because at the end of the day, regardless of your partner or whoever you spend your life with, you will ultimately be with yourself the longest alone, so you might as well learn to love being alone and love things you can do alone.

I know I am not alone (all puns intended) when I say that doing things by yourself can be scary and uncomfortable. Because you fear that someone is going to judge you, but really no one cares.

I challenge you to take yourself out to lunch or coffee and sit alone and learn to love being by yourself.
