The Best Advice for Law Students

law school advice, law school tips, law school, law student, blue and white

I finished my second year of law school a week ago and I am going to be starting my last year of school EVER in the fall. That’s kind of crazy! Anyway, after two years of law school I finally feel like I’ve grasped it and can share the best advice I was given and the best advice I would like to pass along.

Get an externship!

During your first year of law school, you aren’t allowed to work outside of school because your job is to pass and do the best you can, but after your first year, you are allowed to work. You take most of your required classes your first year. After that you only have a couple more classes you have to take to graduate. After your first year, especially if you went straight from undergrad to law school, you are probably burnt out (like I was and still am) therefore, I highly recommend applying for an externship

An externship is a non-paid legal internship where you work for academic credit.

This means you get academic credit to work. Which also means you get to work instead of taking an elective class. I rather work and commute (even if commuting is a hassle) rather than sit in a classroom and have to listen to an extra lecture that doesn’t have anything to do with what I want to do and take a class that requires me to read and do more homework that I have no interest in.

I have done two externships, one each semester of my second year of law school. I love them because you get real life work experience, with something to put on your resume and something you can actually talk about during interviews.

I cannot speak more highly of externships. I got to work for an amazing firm and organization during the school year.

This is the best advice I can give to any law student. I am so happy I was advised to do an externship and I loved it so much I did another one. Maybe I will do a third in the fall!
