Five Friday Favorites | 15 | Podcast Recs, Sunglasses, Netflix Recs, Pilates Studio and NYC Date Night Restaurant

east river, sunset, nyc, manhattan, summer, sunset
Happy Friday! Sharing my five favorites from the week below:

1.          Podcast: Match Made in Manhattan. One of my favorite podcasts ever. I love hearing about dating stories (the good and the bad). Katy, Adam and Colby share fun things to do in New York too.

2.          Never Have I Ever Season 3 on Netflix. This season wasn’t my favorite. It was definitely appealing to a more mature crowd, despite the high school setting. I thought there were a lot of bedroom scenes for this high school show.

3.          Ray-Ban aviators. I cannot stop wearing these sunglasses. I’ve had them for years. They go with absolutely everything. But every single picture of me in the summer is in these shades, so I think it is time for a new pair.

4.          Avea Pilates. Hands down the best Pilates studio I’ve ever been to. Pilates is really expensive, but the best toning workout in my opinion. I am always sore for days. I always leave the class in bliss.

5.          St. Tropez Wine Bar. Such a delicious hidden gem. They have two locations in NYC. I went to the one in SOHO and the food was divine. We had the tomato tarte and shrimp as starters. For my main, I had scallops over sweet potato puree. We had a half-bottle (yes, you read that right) of rosé. We ended dinner with the decadent chocolate mousse.

My Last First Day of Law School: First Day of 3L Year

law school, fdoc, first day of class, first day of school year, law school

Well, that went fast, yet slow at the same time. Today is my first day of my last year of law school and my last year of school ever.

first day, law school, college, business casual, summer outfit, business professional, internship outfit, legal intern, attorney, lawyer

I am normally a very sentimental person but to be frank, I can’t wait until law school is over.

It’s been the longest and most challenging two, going on three years of my life and I am ready for it to be over.

office outfit, business casual, workwear, law school, attorney, lawyer, attorney style, office style, lawyer style, summer office outfit,

I’m sure I will miss being a student and learning interesting things, but overall, I am thrilled to be heading into my last year of school.

I am so close to becoming an attorney. My lifelong goal and dream is coming true in a few months. I can't believe it. I am terrified of the Bar Exam (I already signed up for a prep course) but after next July I will be free from studying!

I am going on my 19th year of school straight. I have never not been a student. So, I’m sure next year will be weird without a first day of school post, so I am trying to embrace the good things about law school as I finish out my academic career.

As excited as I am to be done with law school, I am looking forward to the classes I am taking this semester.

I am taking Wills, Trusts & Estates, Social Media and the Law, Law & the Role of In-House Counsel, Entertainment Law and Mediation.

This semester, I am serving as a peer mentor and Articles Editor for Family Court Review Volume 60.

I am also continuing to intern in-house at the company I worked for over the summer. I am so excited that my bosses extended my internship so I can continue to do work I am passionate about and work with the best team.

I am filming my last first day of school and will be posting it to my socials. Check it out!

Only a couple of months until I am Elizabeth Guariglia, J.D.

Five Friday Favorites | 14 | NYC Speakeasy, Discounted Broadway Tickets, Podcast and Netflix Recommendations

Happy Friday! Here are a few of my favorite things this week:

1.          The Garret East behind Borrachito. My first NYC speakeasy! This one is behind a soda vending machine in the East Village. I thought you had to have a reservation to go, but you don’t. Reservations are only required to get a table. Next time I go I wouldn’t get a table.

2.          Moulin Rouge on Broadway. If you’re going to see a show, see this one! Broadway Week is here, so go buy your buy one, get one free Broadway tickets!

3.          My electric toothbrush. A pink Amazon favorite. Once you click the start button, it goes for two minutes without stopping, to make sure your teeth are super clean!

4.          Don’t Blame Me podcast. I’ve been listening to this podcast for years. Listeners call in and ask Melissa and Meghan for advice. It’s nice to hear advice from different perspectives. It’s really interesting.

5.          Uncoupled on Netflix. This is a funny lighthearted show staring Neil Patrick Harris who is heartbroken after his boyfriend of 17 years leaves him. The quick 8-episode scripted show shows the funny trials and tribulations of dating in NYC.

What it’s like to Work In-house as an Attorney Versus Working at a Law Firm as an Attorney

attorney, lawyer, office outfit, lawyer style, lawyer fashion

I just finished up my summer internship working for the legal team of a publicly traded corporation. This blog post is just based on my observations while shadowing attorneys.

This was my first in-house legal position after several positions of working for nonprofits and law firms.

I loved this job.

On one of my first days of work, general counsel, my boss, told me that when you work at a firm you have a vertical mindset, where you become a professional in one specific topic. But when you work for a company, you have a horizontal mindset, and you have to be a professional in a lot of areas.

I loved that analogy. I couldn’t agree more.

I am sharing some similarities and differences that I have observed working in-house and for a firm.

lawyer fashion, lawyer style, office outfit, workwear, office style, business casual, attorney, lawyer, legal intern

-Attorneys are involved, duh!

-Legal research is conducted the same way in both places of business (Lexis, Westlaw).

-The same ethical rules apply like attorney-client privilege.

-All attorneys work long hours.

-Working in-house means that the legal team will have attorneys and non-attorneys on the team. Most law firms have non-attorneys (such as paralegals), but the attorneys and paralegals work on the same matters. The people in the firm that do administrative things for the company will not collaborate on a matter, like they would at a corporation.

legal intern, attorney, intern, internship, business casual, office outfit, lawyer fashion, lawyer style, business casual, what to wear to work, what to wear to the office

-Working for a company means you collaborate with other departments on projects (marketing, sales, finance).

-Working in-house means attorneys give legal advice on lots of different matters. Depending on the firm, and your specialization in the firm, you could give legal advice on lots of different topics, but usually not.

-The clients are different. For in-house attorneys, the client is the company, whereas a firm has many clients.

-The goals are different. For an in-house position, your goal as an attorney is to mitigate risk for the company. At a firm, you work for your client and help them achieve what they want to accomplish.

-In-house counsel requires hiring a lot of outside counsel as you cannot know everything about every topic.

-Pay is different.

T&P's Top 10 of the Week | No. 20 | Early Fall Transition Pieces and Fall 2022 Trends

Fall is not anywhere close to arriving in New York, but I couldn't help but start to look at fall 2022 trends and pieces that are hitting the market.
It appears that the big colors this fall are: plum, royal/midnight blue and olive green as seen above.
This color pallet is starting to get me excited for fall.

I think those tortoise shell shoes are so unique. That lady-like denim coat is to-die-for. I also love the rich blue suede block heels.

24th Birthday Recap: Dinner in NYC, NYC Spa Day at QC NY and Family Party

24th birthday, nyc, governors island, friends

Last Thursday I turned 24! Today I am sharing my annual blog post about my birthday weekend. You can check out my Instagram stories and reel for more behind the scenes of our weekend. I had a lovely birthday weekend. It was so much fun and I felt so loved near and far by friends and family. Thank you for your sweet birthday messages.

Wednesday, August 3, 2022

Starting the day before my birthday I was showered with gifts from my coworkers. I teased the idea out that I would work from home on my birthday because I really didn’t want to go into the office on my birthday (because who actually wants to work on their birthday), but I decided that I would work in person on Thursday because I was working on a big project that is easier to do in person than remote. Anyway, my team totally surprised me and showered me with gifts. Another co-worker gave me a bouquet of flowers and a handwritten card. Another coworker in the Midwest shipped me a bracelet. I felt so loved on my last day of 23.

I am a sentimental person. I always get a little emotional on my birthday because I am partially sad that I am getting older but at the same time it’s also exciting, for a fresh start (like New Year’s Eve). It’s nice to be able to reflect on the year that I had. It’s also a nice reminder of how much I’m loved by friends and family far and wide.

I woke up on my birthday and I was surprised to see stick-balloons all over the bathroom and the kitchen. I went for my 6am walk, bumped into my birthday twin in the kitchen after our morning exercises and then headed to work. I was surprised to find a bottle of wine on my desk.

After lunch, I got a call from Grubhub that a gift was waiting for me in the lobby of my office building. I was praying it was something office appropriate. Thankfully, it was a tray of cookies from my friend Lauren, who wanted to make sure everyone in the office knew it was my birthday. Of course, they already knew because I’m a Leo, and we Leos love to talk about ourselves. I ate about 8 cookies…

For dinner, my parents took my twin and I to Nino’s Beach. Nino’s is a new restaurant that opened in Port Washington, on Long Island, on the water. It is a limited menu, but the food was delicious. It is also definitely a place to be seen. Lots of fancy designer bags, shoes and outfits on the dinner guests. But overall, it was a great experience.

We finished the night with our favorite chocolate mousse cake from Buttercooky Bakery.

I got my nails done and put on a spicy outfit for my NYC family dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant: Giano, in the East Village. I had the Gemelli with pesto, we shared burrata, calamari, and a couple of bottles of wine. The owner even sang to me with a tiramisu.

We rushed over to our drinks reservation at the Garret East, a speakeasy behind Borrachito, a taco stand, also in the East Village. It was scorching hot in there. It was fun though. I thought it was table only bar, so I made a reservation, but it didn’t seem like you actually needed one, as there were plenty of people standing.

Butter Lane cupcakes, also in the East Village, are the best cupcakes!

Saturday, August 6, 2022

Alex and I woke up early and headed to my favorite place in NYC, (you guessed it) Governors Island. Governors Island just opened a spa on island, QC NY. It was divine. This was my birthday gift from Alex. I absolutely savored every minute. We checked in at 11:30 am and had booked a 5 hour stay. The spa is beautiful.

We put our stuff in our lockers, in the beautiful locker rooms, where we found our towels, robes and flipflops. I wore my own flipflops. We then grabbed chairs, on the best spot on the lawn, overlooking Manhattan in front of the pool. There were no umbrellas or shady spots, so Alex melted, but I loved every second. We alternated our time between our chairs in the sun and the very warmly heated pools with various spots with bubbles and lounge seats. It was so relaxing.

There are two outdoor pools with lots of places to sit and lounge. After becoming prunes, we went inside and had lunch at the Bistro. It was very overpriced airport-like food. I would opt out of the food if you don’t go around lunch time. If you bought an alcoholic beverage, you got a complementary snack plate.

Alex and I explored the grounds a bit more and found the various relaxation rooms upstairs. There was a room with various perfumes, an infrared room, a meditation room, a room with egg chairs, a room that was upside down (yes, actually), and a room with rocking chairs. Also, this spa had about 10 saunas located all over the property. After going upstairs to explore, we went downstairs to the basement and found more saunas (one sauna had a temperature of 157 degrees Fahrenheit, no thanks). We also found steam rooms, foot baths and the Vichy showers. We tried two steam rooms for all of 2 minutes before I felt like I couldn’t breathe and we had to get out. I enjoyed the Vichy showers. It was relaxing. The footbaths grossed me out.

Maybe the best part was the real shower in the locker room. It was the best shower I’ve had in a long time. You know when the water is the perfect pressure and the perfect temperature? That was this one. The locker rooms were immaculate. The best part about the locker rooms were the vanity areas with Dyson hairdryers (yes, you read that right).

I recommend going earlier in the day, like we did at 11:30, to get a good seat by the pool or by the views. In the afternoon, it got really busy, but I loved it. I definitely will be going back.

After our relaxing pool day, we walked over to Pizza Yard on the island, where I ordered 7 pizzas for our sunset pizza dinner. I was determined to spend the whole day on Governor’s Island, and that’s what I did. Some friends came to meet Alex and I at a picnic table overlooking the skyline and Lady Liberty. We ate, ate some more cupcakes (I had two at dinner, oops) and then I showed our friends the best parts of Governors Island before taking the ferry back to the mainland.

The fun didn’t stop on Sunday. My family came over after dinner Sunday night for “Cocktails and Cake.” Hardly anyone drank, it was Sunday night, but there was plenty of dessert and cake at my house. I ended the night with some cookies and another cupcake.
